Review the nearby chat / conversations window layout and decide on a direction.

Compare the layouts of Firestorm, upstream Alchemy and Black Dragon: tabs vs. a combined conversations window, participant list placement, input bar, toolbar buttons, timestamps and name styling, how IMs/groups are torn off or docked, compact modes.
Note what users complain about in the current (LL-derived) layout.
Options: adopt one of the above wholesale, cherry-pick parts, or design a custom Slipstream layout.
Deliverable: a short write-up with screenshots/mockups and a recommendation, then implementation tickets.

Also support selectable message styles: IRC style (compact single lines, [time] <Name> message) and Discord style (grouped messages under a name header with avatar thumbnail, timestamps on hover, consecutive messages from one sender collapsed). Make the style a setting so users can pick either (or the classic LL layout).
