Follow-up to #783.

Today

The weather audio is a CC0 pack shipped with the viewer: .ogg files in app_settings/sounds/weather, described by manifest.json.

Goal

Let each weather sound be a grid sound asset UUID instead of a local file. Once that works, the pack could be uploaded to the grid and the viewer would fetch the sounds as normal sound assets. That shrinks the download and lets the sounds change without a viewer release.

Scope

  • Manifest: each manifest entry can name a sound asset UUID alongside, or in place of, the file. Bundled files stay as the fallback.
  • Loading: UUID sounds load through the normal sound-asset path (fetch and cache). A layer whose asset hasn't arrived yet stays silent until it's ready, and must not stall.
  • Looping: check that SL-encoded sound assets keep the beds seamless. Grid sounds are mono, have a length limit and get re-encoded. The long stereo beds may need splitting into shorter clips or another looping approach. Measure this before committing to the move.
  • Overrides: optionally, a setting, or a field in the parcel weather tag, to substitute individual sounds by UUID, so a parcel can supply its own rain or thunder.
  • Licence and credits: keep the CC0 attribution (SOURCES.md) available for uploaded assets.

Open questions

  • Upload limits on grid sounds (length, sample rate, mono) and what they do to the beds.
  • Which account owns the uploaded assets.
