    Slipstream Beta 1.0.0.5 -- v1.0.0-beta.5 (34d1d50383).

    Slipstream 1.0.0 — Release Candidate (beta 5)

Beta 5 replaces Beta 4, which crashed before the login screen on most graphics cards; it is otherwise the same release.

This is the release candidate for Slipstream's first full release. Please report anything that looks wrong; if nothing serious turns up, this build becomes 1.0.0.

    Highlights

    • The OpenGL renderer is gone. Slipstream is now Vulkan-only, end to end: world, UI, snapshots and all. Less code, fewer surprises, faster startup.
    • AMD FSR 3.1 upscaling and anti-aliasing, alongside our TAA.
    • Deferred lighting and two-phase occlusion culling: faster lighting and less wasted drawing in dense scenes.
    • More work in parallel: async compute and frame pipelining overlap GPU work, and object processing moved off the render thread — smoother frame pacing in busy regions.
    • Faster crowds: avatar animation work on the CPU was cut by more than half in busy scenes (~1.5 ms/frame at an 85-avatar party).
    • Draw distance from 8 m up to 4096 m, loading up to a 5×5 block of regions around you.
    • Smooth terrain: tessellated terrain with distance-based detail (Advanced Graphics). Ray-traced shadows now match the smoothed surface.
    • Ray-traced reflection probes ("Raytraced" probe detail) on supported GPUs.
    • Texture compression: textures are compressed on your graphics card as they load, using about 4× less video memory with no visible loss at High quality, so far more textures stay sharp. Cards with 16 GB or less get High quality automatically (you'll see a notice); bigger cards can turn it on in Preferences > Graphics > Advanced. Levels: Off, High quality, Balanced, Max savings and Adaptive, which picks the cheapest format that still looks right for each texture. Switching takes effect without a restart.
    • No more black screen on launch: compiled graphics pipelines are now cached on disk; first launch shows a "Preparing graphics" screen, later launches are fast.

    New features

    • Lightbox: new Camera tab (ported from Firestorm's photo tools), full shadow controls including all ray-traced shadow settings, and F1 now opens Lightbox.
    • World pause (Ctrl+Shift+F): freeze the scene locally for photography.
    • Orbit camera: right-drag now orbits a point attached to your avatar — it follows and turns with you, and your avatar faces the camera direction (like Black Dragon). Option in Move & View.
    • Right-click walk: hold both mouse buttons to walk forward.
    • Edit window Links tab: every link and face of an object in a list, with hover highlight, texture thumbnails and colour swatches per face.
    • Accurate rigged mesh picking: click and right-click worn rigged mesh and animesh using the GPU (Preferences > Advanced > "Accurate rigged mesh picking").
    • Chat (ported from Firestorm): contacts built into the conversations window, keyword alerts, autoresponse/away, chat history search, restore open IMs at login, group chat snooze, radar "entered/left chat range" alerts, typing indicators in name tags, /setchannel and a channel selector, OOC and MU* poses, separate timestamp options, and an unread-IM count in the window title.
    • People window: Firestorm-style radar range slider.
    • System avatar bodies: option to stop rendering system bodies (Move & View) plus automatic skipping when fully covered.
    • Background FPS limit: new slider in Advanced Graphics to cap the frame rate when the viewer isn't focused.
    • Snapshot to disk now shows the output folder, with buttons to change it and open it.
    • Settings import: bring settings and layout over from other installed viewers (never reads passwords or credentials).
    • Help > Report Bug: send a bug report with your log straight from the viewer — no account needed.
    • Camera: Firestorm's camera behaviour options.
    • Arch Linux package: a slipstream-bin PKGBUILD is attached to each release (download it and run makepkg -si); an AUR listing will follow.

    Fixes

    • Startup crash (Beta 4) before the login screen on graphics cards with 16 GB of video memory or less.
    • Clicking through see-through parts of objects: clicks, hover and selection now pass through transparent areas of textures (leaf gaps, cut-outs, clear glass, decals, hair cards) to what you actually see behind them. With Build > Options > Select Invisible Objects on, you can still select cut-outs while building.
    • Closing the viewer could take a long time (it crashed on exit after the window closed). It now exits right away.
    • Ray-traced sun shadows switching off on graphics cards with limited memory (especially at Full RT shadow resolution). When memory runs low the viewer now steps settings down gradually, keeps shadows on, and tells you exactly what it changed and why; changed settings stay where they are until you change them back.
    • Linux: web pages, search and media on a prim failed ("media_plugin_cef has failed") when Slipstream was started from a menu/desktop entry or by running the binary directly instead of the slipstream launcher.
    • Clicking scripted attachments ("clickies") on avatars is reliable again, and the hand cursor shows on hover — including clickies worn under mesh bodies and touch-scripted rigged items.
    • Snapshots: fixed crashes when opening the snapshot window, washed-out/bloomed snapshots, and snapshots looking different from the live view.
    • TAA was darkening bright, saturated surfaces (up to ~2× on sunlit paths); TAA, FSR and snapshots now match.
    • Fixed bright "firefly" sparkles feeding bloom with FSR.
    • Fixed phantom shadows cast by mostly-transparent meshes (e.g. eyelashes) with ray-traced shadows.
    • Reduced ray-traced shadow ghosting/smearing on moving avatars.
    • Fixed shadow acne on smooth terrain with ray-traced shadows.
    • Fixed textures dropping to thumbnail quality after alt-tabbing, and on GPUs without Resizable BAR.
    • Fixed white/blank UI elements at startup.
    • Fixed sun shadow-map acne/peter-panning from an oversized light-direction offset.
    • Area search / pathfinding beacons now draw every frame and follow moving objects.
    • God rays no longer draw on top of water and alpha objects.
    • Fixes for older AMD GPUs (Polaris / RX 570–580).
    • Fixed several overlapping controls in Preferences (chat typing options, Move & View, Advanced Graphics) and a clipped People radar.
    • Linux: memory usage now reports correctly.

    Stability, memory and security

    • Memory management: many internal caches that could grow forever over a long session are now bounded and reuse freed space (materials, skins, mesh slots and LOD groups, terrain, animation data, and more). Long sessions and region hopping should no longer creep upward in RAM/VRAM.
    • Security hardening from a full audit: safer handling of textures, meshes, materials, terrain and network data; stricter HTTPS certificate and hostname checking; safer handling of web links, media URLs and chat links (including protection against chat lines that could freeze the viewer); auto-replies now respect mute, friends-only and RLV.

    Defaults changed

    • Script chat particles (EffectScriptChatParticles) and the selection beam (ShowSelectionBeam) are now off by default.

    Notifications

    • When video memory gets tight, you'll now get a message saying so, with suggestions (lower texture resolution or draw distance, turn on texture compression, close other GPU-heavy programs).

    Known issues

    • Windows can run slower than Linux on the same hardware (#247).
    • Some interiors with reflection probes can look darker than expected (#250).
    • Memory use can spike briefly during login and teleports (#262).
    • With default settings and no ray-traced effects on, right-clicking other people's worn rigged mesh (to inspect the item) needs "Accurate rigged mesh picking" set to Always. Clickies work either way.
